A Narrow Escape Essay
This is a true story. It is the story of our narrow escape from sudden death. My brother who is handicapped & myself went to Dadar in Mumbai to visit an Aunt. She lived very near the beach. I was just 15 then & my brother 5. We loved going to the beach but normally always went with our mother or elder sister. On our way back, temptation got the better of us & we came up with the great idea of walking along the beach instead of taking the taxi back home. If we walked along the beach we could get onto the road at the Mahim Fort some distance away from Dadar, from where we could take a taxi to our home. All this seemed fun. We were very excited. My brother totally agreed with my idea. However, we did not tell our aunt about all this, as she might refuse. She thought we were going to take a taxi back home. So off we ran to the beach, once our aunt closed the door. On the beach, we got playing on the sand, making little sand castles, collecting sea shells of all shapes & sizes & time & again dipped our legs in the water enjoying the waves that lashed against the shore. We wrote our names on the sand only to be erased by the coming waves. The tide was coming in but we were blissfully unaware of anything. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We had a great time. We drank coconut water, ate bhel puri & leisurely walked along in the sand. My brother has a paralyzed right hand & walks with a limp. But nothing came in the way of his enjoyment on the beach that day. We splashed water on each otherââ¬â¢s faces. I ran and he tried to catch me. We had so much fun. Time passes so quickly when one is happy. Our games continued. We never knew when afternoon turned to evening. It was beginning to get dark now and it was then that we decided to move on. Engrossed in play we had forgotten to look around. We moved ahead slowly, not noticing the tide. We walked on crossing the rocks and boulders. As we moved ahead, at one point, we were shocked to see that we could not go any further as the waters had covered the place ahead. The tide had come suddenly. Gripped with fear we turned back. But to our astonishment the waters behind us had also touched the shore. Now we were left on a small dry patch of land & were surrounded by water on all sides. We could not move forward, nor go back. There was nowhere to go. Now we realized that we had landed ourselves in a great danger. We could see the Mahim Fort some distance away; the waves lashing against it. That was the place from where we had planned to exit. We stood there confused, afraid and shocked. Alas, we found there was no way out. It seemed our mind has stopped working. We were terrified. In desperation we looked around for some way out. Our only hope was a tall wall that was before us & there were huge boulders near the wall. But how could we climb the wall ? It was dark & no one in sight. The water level was increasing and threatening to cover this place too. Everything was happening so fast. We had very little time left with us. My younger brother was frightened and started crying. I tried to console him, but I myself was also much terrified. What next ? It seemed like an impossible situation. Escape seemed more & more difficult. Only God could save us. So we began praying desperately for God to work a miracle & send His angels to save us. I started cursing myself for not being careful. Due to my folly, we had landed in such a terrible situation. We called for help with the hope that someone would be around that high wall. The water came & brushed our feet pulling us backward into the sea. Would we have a watery grave ? The sea which looked so pleasant and beautiful in the day now looked wild and dangerous, eager to devour us. I thought, what will happen to my parents and sister? They will be devastated. Probably, nobody would know about us or find us. But I restrained my thoughts and decided that I must do something. With great effort, I managed to get my brother onto a huge boulder. He was safe, at least for the time being. The water was now rising. It had reached a little above my knees & I clung onto a boulder for dear life. We were shivering with fear, but we did not give up. We shouted for help, but it appeared there was no one to help us. I decided to get my brother across the wall by myself. I picked him up and made a desperate attempt to get him across the wall, but in the process we slipped and he barely managed to prevent the fall from the boulder into the surging water. His legs got a bit hurt and he cried in agony and pain and fear. I realized that on our own, we can never cross that big wall. Now only help from outside could save us, and there seemed to be none. The ever rising water level was making us frightened more and more. In our desperation, we shouted in a chorus for help. Then miracle happened. Suddenly, we saw two men looking from over the wall. They seemed very scary, rugged, rough & tough guys. But I knew that this was help sent from God in answer to our desperate prayers. They were also shocked to see us in that condition. I pleaded with them for help & they were astonished to see us out there almost drowning. At first, they stood there hesitated. They knew that it was dangerous and they had to risk their own lives to help us. But then they decided to come to our aid. It was not an easy task. Time was running out for us. We were drowning but God was with us. The men came down the wall slowly and carefully & along the boulders. One mis-step and they would fall into the water. But, they moved very carefully and finally succeeded in getting hold of my brother & carried him to safety over the wall. I felt a sense of relief & gratitude. I felt tremendous joy to see that my brother was safe and across that wall. For a moment, I forgot that my own life was still in danger. Now I made every conscious effort to climb the boulders. The men were strong and they pulled me up. With their help, I got over the wall. I got some bruises in my hands and legs, but who cares, since we were alive and safe. Once up, they screamed at us for being so careless & warned us never to do this again. We had learnt our lesson. Overwhelmed with gratitude we thanked the men for their timely help & also tried to give them some money. But they refused to accept that. They too were happy that they were able to save us. They had taken a risk to come down the high wall & walk over those boulders which could have given way & caused some more trouble. Those two men, appeared to be rough guys, but for us, they were like angels, who came as if from nowhere, and saved us from a certain death. They were kind and risked their own lives to save us. The men then stopped a taxi for us. We thanked them once again and hoped to meet them sometimes. We got into the taxi and reached home. Scared & terrified by what we had just experienced we looked like old turkey buzzards. We were wet and bruised, and heaved sigh of relief that we had reached home safely. We narrated all the events to our parents. They were speechless and could not believe what we said. At first they were angry & upset and scolded us for our carelessness, but also happy to see us safe. My mother cried and hugged us and made us promise never to repeat this mistake ever again. We praised & thanked God together for saving our lives. It felt so nice to be back to safety in our home with our parents. All this seemed like a miracle. We could not believe that we had been through a near catastrophe. It was indeed a very narrow escape. This is a lesson for all children who venture on the beach to be alert & watch the tide coming in & come back to safety in good time. Luck may not always be on our side. Rather one should be careful and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Life is precious and one should not waste it by sheer negligence. We got our lesson that day. A Narrow Escape Essay I wake up from my sleep in the class and made a loud screeching sound with my chair. Everyone attention is now at me. I go out of the class since my History teacher was absence today. I climb the stairs heading to the rooftop. I sit at a corner and thinking about the same nightmare that I kept dreaming these days. One day, I went out of the house to hang out with my best friend, Nuha. I waited her at a cafà © where we usually talked nonsense. I started to get bored so I fished out my phone and played games. After 30 minutes waiting, there still no presence of her. I quickly got out of the cafà © and decided to go back home. I messaged her that I left the cafà © and going back home. While I was walking down the street, I felt a presence of someone behind me. The street was empty except me and that person. I quickened my pace as negative thoughts were getting in my mind. I turned to face the person. He wore a black scarf covered half of his face. I felt really scared and I ran anywhere as I could. I only wished one thing that Iââ¬â¢ll find a crowded place later. As I reached a busy road, I can still feel that person is trailing behind me. I ran towards the road without thinking of anything. Suddenly, there was a horn and screeching sound from every direction. I stopped at the middle of the road and covered my ear. I opened my eyes and I saw a blue van coming towards my direction. I just thought that my life will be ended anytime by now. A few moments later, I didnââ¬â¢t feel anything. Slowly I opened my eyes and saw a blue van was just right in front of me. It really was a narrow escape. Then, I canââ¬â¢t think anything and everything went black.

The Theme of Identity in Chang-Rae Leeââ¬â¢s Native Speaker
Chang-rae Lee's first novel Native Speaker became a real success. It makes a significant impact on people, as it touches eternal questions of identity search in the contemporary society. The novel won a great number of awards, which include the 1996 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for First Fiction, the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award, QPB's New Voices Award and others. It appeared in The New York Times and The Best American Essays and Chang-Rae Lee was a finalist for Grantaââ¬â¢s American Novelists. What is remarkable Native Speaker is really worthy of all these awards. Theme of identity is a central one in Native Speaker. The main character of this novel is Henry Park. His parents were Korean immigrants and so all his life Henry tries to become a real American, a native speaker. Henry works as a spy for Glimmer and Associates. His main task is to collect information about non-white immigrants and citizens who have shadowy past. After his sonââ¬â¢s death and the break with his wife Leila Henry is immersed into identity crisis. Only by the end of the novel he is able to recover from this crisis and find his true identity. Henry has analyzed all his life and seen some things in a new light, he makes a long way full of difficulties, disappointments and despair before he comes to true understanding of his identity. After their sonââ¬â¢s death Lelia cannot understand Henryââ¬â¢s reaction, his emotionless state. In reality, Henry cannot come in turns with his sonââ¬â¢s loss, he takes it very hard, but he does not want to show it, he hides his feelings and closes in his shell. Before Leliaââ¬â¢s departure at the airport she gives Henry a brief note, where she describes him: ââ¬Å"You are surreptitious / B+ student of lifeâ⬠¦. Yellow peril: neo-Americanâ⬠¦stranger / follower / traitor / spyâ⬠(Lee 12). This pushes him to reflection about his life. Starting analyzing his past Henry understands that his ability to repress emotions, his skills to memorize everything he learns and a tendency to wear a mask to be socially accepted can be explained by his Korean origin. He also understands that these skills help him to be a natural spy. He is an alien in America, although he was born here, he does his best to be a true American. He does not admit this fact even in his mind but starting thinking about his parents and his origin he understands that it is true. His profession used to help him feel protected and real American because his main mission is to control non-white people: spying is ââ¬Å"the perfect vocation for the person I was, someone who could reside in one place and take half steps out whenever he wished [. . .] I thought I had finally found my truest place in the cultureâ⬠(Lee 127). à At the same time his cold and detached attitude alienates his wife from him. All Henryââ¬â¢s thoughts about his past do not allow him to continue his work, he cannot wear his spy mask any more. He loses his job then he gets another opportunity to work with John Kwang, but this work again reminds him about his Korean origin and his father. Henry tires to reconnect with his wife. She is not sure whether she really means anything for him, whether he loves her or just requires as the housemaid, whose name he does not know. Lelia always pushes her husband for the empathetic reflections. He feels that he must overcome this barrier in cultures between them. Henry knows that Lelia cannot hide her feelings as he does and he loves her for this. ââ¬Å"She must be the worst actor on earth. And perhaps most I loved this about her, her helpless way, love it still, how she can't hide a single thing, that she looks hurt when she is hurt, seems happy when happy. That I know at every moment the precise place where she standsâ⬠(Lee 158). à All in all Henry convinces his wife that she is his life and that she is extremely important for him. He finally is able to be close with Lelia, to build intimacy between them. His perception of the world has changed and so has his identity. At the end of the novel Henry is completely different person with much broader identity. He has found a balance between American and Korean cultures. He has reached harmony inside of his soul. Now he understands that America does not make fell foreigners aliens but it gives freedom and an opportunity to realize desires and make dreams come true. Henry becomes a native speaker of his self and that helps him to be successful in all his activities. Henry understands that identity is something more than just American or Korean nationality. It is your inner self and it does not matter where you live and what you do and what language you speak, the only thing that matter is your inner freedom and moral certainty. Rachel found herself uncharacteristically tongue-tied. Sensory overload was setting inâ⬠¦ the habisphere, the meteorite, the secrets, finding herself unexpectedly face-to-face with a television star. ââ¬Å"I'm surprised to see you here,â⬠she said, attempting to recover. ââ¬Å"When the President told me he'd recruited civilian scientists for authentication of a NASA find, I guess I expectedâ⬠¦ â⬠She hesitated. ââ¬Å"Real scientists?â⬠Tolland grinned. Rachel flushed, mortified. ââ¬Å"That's not what I meant.â⬠ââ¬Å"Don't worry about it,â⬠Tolland said. ââ¬Å"That's all I've heard since I got here.â⬠The administrator excused himself, promising to catch up with them later. Tolland turned now to Rachel with a curious look. ââ¬Å"The administrator tells me your father is Senator Sexton?â⬠Rachel nodded. Unfortunately. ââ¬Å"A Sexton spy behind enemy lines?â⬠ââ¬Å"Battle lines are not always drawn where you might think.â⬠An awkward silence. ââ¬Å"So tell me,â⬠Rachel said quickly, ââ¬Å"what's a world-famous oceanographer doing on a glacier with a bunch of NASA rocket scientists?â⬠Tolland chuckled. ââ¬Å"Actually, some guy who looked a lot like the President asked me to do him a favor. I opened my mouth to say ââ¬ËGo to hell,' but somehow I blurted, ââ¬ËYes, sir.'â⬠Rachel laughed for the first time all morning. ââ¬Å"Join the club.â⬠Although most celebrities seemed smaller in person, Rachel thought Michael Tolland appeared taller. His brown eyes were just as vigilant and passionate as they were on television, and his voice carried the same modest warmth and enthusiasm. Looking to be a weathered and athletic forty-five, Michael Tolland had coarse black hair that fell in a permanent windswept tuft across his forehead. He had a strong chin and a carefree mannerism that exuded confidence. When he'd shaken Rachel's hand, the callused roughness of his palms reminded her he was not a typical ââ¬Å"softâ⬠television personality but rather an accomplished seaman and hands-on researcher. ââ¬Å"To be honest,â⬠Tolland admitted, sounding sheepish, ââ¬Å"I think I was recruited more for my PR value than for my scientific knowledge. The president asked me to come up and make a documentary for him.â⬠ââ¬Å"A documentary? About a meteorite? But you're an oceanographer.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's exactly what I told him! But he said he didn't know of any meteorite documentarians. He told me my involvement would help bring mainstream credibility to this find. Apparently he plans to broadcast my documentary as part of tonight's big press conference when he announces the discovery.â⬠A celebrity spokesman. Rachel sensed the savvy political maneuverings of Zach Herney at work. NASA was often accused of talking over the public's head. Not this time. They'd pulled in the master scientific communicator, a face Americans already knew and trusted when it came to science. Tolland pointed kitty-corner across the dome to a far wall where a press area was being set up. There was a blue carpet on the ice, television cameras, media lights, a long table with several microphones. Someone was hanging a backdrop of a huge American flag. ââ¬Å"That's for tonight,â⬠he explained. ââ¬Å"The NASA administrator and some of his top scientists will be connected live via satellite to the White House so they can participate in the President's eight o'clock broadcast.â⬠Appropriate, Rachel thought, pleased to know Zach Herney didn't plan to cut NASA out of the announcement entirely. ââ¬Å"So,â⬠Rachel said with a sigh, ââ¬Å"is someone finally going to tell me what's so special about this meteorite?â⬠Tolland arched his eyebrows and gave her a mysterious grin. ââ¬Å"Actually, what's so special about this meteorite is best seen, not explained.â⬠He motioned for Rachel to follow him toward the neighboring work area. ââ¬Å"The guy stationed over here has plenty of samples he can show you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Samples? You actually have samples of the meteorite?â⬠ââ¬Å"Absolutely. We've drilled quite a few. In fact, it was the initial core samples that alerted NASA to the importance of the find.â⬠Unsure of what to expect, Rachel followed Tolland into the work area. It appeared deserted. A cup of coffee sat on a desk scattered with rock samples, calipers, and other diagnostic gear. The coffee was steaming. ââ¬Å"Marlinson!â⬠Tolland yelled, looking around. No answer. He gave a frustrated sigh and turned to Rachel. ââ¬Å"He probably got lost trying to find cream for his coffee. I'm telling you, I went to Princeton postgrad with this guy, and he used to get lost in his own dorm. Now he's a National Medal of Science recipient in astrophysics. Go figure.â⬠Rachel did a double take. ââ¬Å"Marlinson? You don't by any chance mean the famous Corky Marlinson, do you?â⬠Tolland laughed. ââ¬Å"One and the same.â⬠Rachel was stunned. ââ¬Å"Corky Marlinson is here?â⬠Marlinson's ideas on gravitational fields were legendary among NRO satellite engineers. ââ¬Å"Marlinson is one of the President's civilian recruits?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, one of the real scientists.â⬠Real is right, Rachel thought. Corky Marlinson was as brilliant and respected as they came. ââ¬Å"The incredible paradox about Corky,â⬠Tolland said, ââ¬Å"is that he can quote you the distance to Alpha Centauri in millimeters, but he can't tie his own necktie.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wear clip-ons!â⬠a nasal, good-natured voice barked nearby. ââ¬Å"Efficiency over style, Mike. You Hollywood types don't understand that!â⬠Rachel and Tolland turned to the man now emerging from behind a large stack of electronic gear. He was squat and rotund, resembling a pug dog with bubble eyes and a thinning, comb-over haircut. When the man saw Tolland standing with Rachel, he stopped in his tracks. ââ¬Å"Jesus Christ, Mike! We're at the friggin' North Pole and you still manage to meet gorgeous women. I knew I should have gone into television!â⬠Michael Tolland was visibly embarrassed. ââ¬Å"Ms. Sexton, please excuse Dr. Marlinson. What he lacks in tact, he more than makes up for in random bits of totally useless knowledge about our universe.â⬠Corky approached. ââ¬Å"A true pleasure, ma'am. I didn't catch your name.â⬠ââ¬Å"Rachel,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Rachel Sexton.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sexton?â⬠Corky let out a playful gasp. ââ¬Å"No relation to that shortsighted, depraved senator, I hope!â⬠Tolland winced. ââ¬Å"Actually, Corky, Senator Sexton is Rachel's father.â⬠Corky stopped laughing and slumped. ââ¬Å"You know, Mike, it's really no wonder I've never had any luck with the ladies.â⬠22 Prize-winning astrophysicist Corky Marlinson ushered Rachel and Tolland into his work area and began sifting through his tools and rock samples. The man moved like a tightly wound spring about to explode. ââ¬Å"All right,â⬠he said, quivering excitedly, ââ¬Å"Ms. Sexton, you're about to get the Corky Marlinson thirty-second meteorite primer.â⬠Tolland gave Rachel a be-patient wink. ââ¬Å"Bear with him. The man really wanted to be an actor.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, and Mike wanted to be a respected scientist.â⬠Corky rooted around in a shoebox and produced three small rock samples and aligned them on his desk. ââ¬Å"These are the three main classes of meteorites in the world.â⬠Rachel looked at the three samples. All appeared as awkward spheroids about the size of golf balls. Each had been sliced in half to reveal its cross section. ââ¬Å"All meteorites,â⬠Corky said, ââ¬Å"consist of varying amounts of nickel-iron alloys, silicates, and sulfides. We classify them on the basis of their metal-to-silicate ratios.â⬠Rachel already had the feeling Corky Marlinson's meteorite ââ¬Å"primerâ⬠was going to be more than thirty seconds.

BC MoH also aims to fulfill certain major goals which include optimizing information management and providing people of British Columbia access to superior quality services in each hospital among others. In this regard, in order to meet these varied kinds of challenges and goals efficiently the use of health information systems technology can be observed as a major beneficial facet (Ministry of Health, 2011). Recommendation on EMR Adoption By considering above depicted aims and objectives of BC MoH, it can be advised that the use of EMR can be an invaluable proposition. It will significantly enable to ensure information management of the entire population of BC. Moreover, as it is recognized that determining the amount of aging population is a critical challenge for MoH, the advent of full-fledged use of EMR would enable the MoH to have a thorough access of major patient related data efficiently. EMR adoption can be recommended for MoH due to various other benefits derived from EMR. Primarily, a collection of financial, operational and clinical benefits can be obtained by healthcare professional through EMR. EMR enables to make efficient the entire operational workflow (Landon, n.d.). In terms of financial benefits, through the use of EMR precise coding of the condition of a patient can be made which in turn can facilitate to prepare appropriate billing and augment patient throughput. Moreover, patient related data can be viewed comprehensively by using EMR due to greater exchange of information by

Nuclear generators - Term Paper Example The steam is then used to power the turbines that generate power. In nuclear generators, the fuel comes from nuclear fission, which is essentially the breakdown of the nucleus of a heavy atom into two smaller and lighter nuclei. The primary fuel in nuclear generators is uranium, either enriched, in its natural state, or in combination with plutonium. ... This is true for so-called reactors that are based on light-water designs, and the table below details the different types of decay, emitted radiation, and the associated charge, mass and energy (National Academy of Sciences): Table Source: National Academy of Sciences Decay Process Radiation Emitted Mass (amu) Electrical Charge Typical Energy (MeV) Alpha Emission Alpha particle (?) 4 +2 4ââ¬â9 Beta Emission Beta particle () 0.0005 ?1 0ââ¬â3 Positron Emission Positron (?+) 0.0005 +1 0ââ¬â3 à Two gamma-rays (?) 0 0 0.51 Electron Capture Characteristic x-ray 0 0 0ââ¬â0.1 Internal Transition Gamma-ray (?) 0 0 0.1ââ¬â3 Internal Conversion Converted electron (e?) 0.0005 ?1 0.1ââ¬â1 à Characteristic x-ray 0 0 0.0ââ¬â1 Neutron Emission Neutron (n) 1 0 0ââ¬â14 Spontaneous Fission (e.g., Cf-252) Fission products and other radiations ââ¬â ââ¬â ?200 Table Source: National Academy of Sciences As earlier discussed, power is generated in nuclear power generators/reactors largely through fission, and largely through the use of two types of radioactive fuels, namely uranium and plutonium, either alone or in combination. The plot below provides what are called yield curves for two fuel types, uranium-235 and plutonium 239, as a function of the mass number (National Academy of Sciences; World Nuclear Association; Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory): Graph Source: National Academy of Sciences/CPSMA Fission yields are related to the amount of the element that is generated for every fission reaction that occurs. The yield curve that is generated is basically the same for every kind of known fission reaction, and so the plot above is universalizable and replicable,

This paper briefly explains the Mumbai terrorist attack with the help of its cause and effect, culprits, possible prevention strategies etc BBC News (23 Nov 2009) has reported that the religious site where the Babri mosque was destroyed in 1992 in the northern Indian town of Ayodhya has been a flashpoint between Hindus and Muslims for years. Indiaââ¬â¢s relationships with Pakistan have damaged a lot because of the destruction of Muslim Mosque Babri Masjid by certain Hindu fundamentalists. Hindu fundamentalists in India believe that the Babri Masjid was situated at their God Ramââ¬â¢s birth place, Ayodhya and former Mughal King Baber has captured that place and constructed the mosque without the permission from the Hindus. So they believe that Ramââ¬â¢s birth place is a sacred place and a temple should be constructed in that place for worshipping their God Ram. The result was the destruction of the existing mosque in 1992. The effect of the Babri Masjid was not visible immediately. Even thought the Muslim people all over the world were agitated by this act, most of them suppressed their displeasure at that time. Indiaââ¬â¢s image as a secular democratic state in the eyes of the external world has severely damaged because of the above incident. Muslim

Patient ratio to nurse affects patients ans nurses in canadian health Essay
Patient ratio to nurse affects patients ans nurses in canadian health care - Essay Example Effects of Patient-Nurse Ratio to the Nurses, Patients, and Canadian Health Care Introduction Canadaââ¬â¢s health care system has undergone enormous change (Forest, 2004, p. 150). One of these changes involves the Health Human Resource Planning (HHRP) and has posed challenges related to patient-nurse ratio. The HHRP drastically affect the role of the health care providers such as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, caregivers, and even patients. That is why the Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada proposed that health care must be matched as closely as possible to the health needs of the population (Forest, 2004, p. 151). I had been on practicum in a care home and I noticed how nurses are responsible for 25 patients and 8 patients for each care aid. Based on observation, that nurse and care aid ratio to patients had a huge impact on patient care. Because of that number, a lot of things were missed, poorly done, rushed, and worst commission of negligence. Nur se-patient ratio is not fair especially in care homes and in hospitals. During my practicum as an LPN, I had observed that the quality of care an LPN could give was compromised due to extra load. The LPN cannot bring out the best care for patient and the nurses became task oriented. Both the nurses and LPN cannot spare an enormous amount of time to build a good relationship with the patients. In addition, care aids are given some responsibilities that should be done by a nurse. For example, range of motion (ROM) exercises was performed by LPN although these persons might not know the importance of ROM exercises. As I was talking and taking care of these patients, I noticed presence of contractures because their exercises are not being carried out even though it is written in the chart. Also, topical medications application was assigned to the care aid but it is not applied everyday committing this mistake repeatedly. The unfair patient-nurse ratio diminished the time nurses spend wi th patient. If a nurse had a little bit extra time to spend with patient, it might relieve patientââ¬â¢s anxiety and will ask questions about their health. But instead, patients are given sedatives and nurses no longer sit with the client to alleviate anxiety. More and more drugs are given and it just adds to the drug toxicity in the body. Most of the patients admitted to the hospital are seriously ill. They went to the hospital for cure and not to have additional serious complications on top of it. Studies found out that lower nurse-patient staffing was linked to the occurrences of increased urinary tract infections, pneumonia, thrombosis, pulmonary lung congestion, and other lung-related problems following major surgery. This nurse-patient ratio caused nursesââ¬â¢ burnout as they have to give medications to 25 patients including the tube patientââ¬â¢s medication, IV medication, and insulin injection which were time consuming. Nurses look like robot in giving care and donà ¢â¬â¢t have enough patient time. In some instances, old patients take medication slowly consuming a bulk of time nurses could provide to other patients. In hospitals, nurses are given extra load of acute patients. Later on, this compromised care and adds extra stress on the part of the nurse. In general, the lower nurse

Waiting for gusfman Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Waiting for gusfman - Essay Example The form of the ââ¬Ëmockumentaryââ¬â¢ not only allows for this type of satire, but it also creates a satire of the form of the documentary as well. The film Waiting for Guffman provides for a look at the idea of community as seen through the social interactions that are required to develop an event that celebrates the uniqueness of the community, while that uniqueness is revealed for its absurdity. Waiting for Guffman (1996) is a film in which the genre of the ââ¬Ëmockumentaryââ¬â¢ as developed by Rob Reiner through the innovative and classic film This is Spinal Tap (1986) is used to satirize a cultural event. Christopher Guest, who co-wrote and starred in Reinerââ¬â¢s film, creates the work Waiting for Guffman as a way of examining the concept of the a local theater group as they attempt to put on a production as a way of celebrating the townââ¬â¢s sesquicentennial. Guffman refers to a man named Mort Guffman who is reported to be Broadway talent scout who will be attending the event. The production is based on the history of the town which has parallel details of the type that might be found in many small towns, crossing the line to the absurd as the town is proclaimed to be ââ¬ËThe Stool Capital of the Worldââ¬â¢. Christopher Guest plays the character Corky St. Clair whose visions are often beyond the capacity of his small theater to achieve. The film utilizes the suspension of natural laws through explorations of the absurd as they relate to the truths of many small towns across America. As Guestââ¬â¢s character presents himself as an over the top and flamboyant theater director, he embraces the idea of homosexuality within a small town atmosphere as being represented by extravagance and eccentricity. Through a stereotypical portrayal, he comments on the avant guarde as it is explored in less than sophisticated surroundings, missing the mark and flying wide into an absurdity of his

Study Habits Essay Example for Free
Study Habits Essay Do you have a friend that never studies for tests, yet he always seems to do well and aces them? Itââ¬â¢s probably because he has good study habits. To improve your study habits you must first realize what your distractions are and eliminate them. Second, you must choose a good, quiet place to study without interruptions. Lastly, you should write down the material several times as it is a strategy proven to help memorize and learn the material. These steps will help you do better in school and have great opportunities in the future. The first step to having better study habits is probably the hardest one for most people: Acceptance. People refuse to think that talking on the phone while you study or having the radio on with songs that you know and love jeopardizes your material retention. The first step consists of you eliminating all of those negative factors so you can concentrate on your study session. Turning off your phone, logging out of your Facebook, Twitter and any other social media accounts, and concentrating on your goal are ways that you can use to be more efficient in your learning. These are usually the things that distract us the most so itââ¬â¢s important that you deal with them in order to focus and eventually succeed academically. But personal distractions arenââ¬â¢t always the things that keep us from our studies. The second step will teach you how to cancel out any outside interference. To ensure that you donââ¬â¢t get constantly interrupted with noise, questions and conversation with friends or family, you must choose a place where you can study quietly and alone. When youââ¬â¢re at home, family members usually donââ¬â¢t know what youââ¬â¢re doing and are unaware that they are interrupting your study time. In order to avoid this you can go to your room or the house office and study quietly and isolated. Chores and tasks around the house must come second in your list of priorities after studying. This will help you focus more and finish faster. The fewer interruptions you have, the quicker you study and go back to doing the things you want to do. This takes us to the final step necessary to improve your study habits. A technique that helps you retain information better and faster. The third step is a strategy that people use when they are short on time or when the material seems to be too overwhelming. Writing the material down several times has been proved to work better than reading a page over and over when memorizing. But in order for this method to work you must follow the first two steps. This way, not only are you writing it over and over but you are also focused on what you are writing which makes learning and absorbing the material way easier and faster. With this study tool you can be certain that youââ¬â¢ll remember every detail and vocabulary words and terms in the test and assignments. It doesnââ¬â¢t stop here. There are a million ways to study and have success in your academic life. Every person reacts a different way and everybody retains information a different way too. These steps are pretty generic; useful for any kind of learning. They work together as a unit. The first two steps cover the types of distractions and how to get rid of them, while the third step is a tool that you can use to make the most of that free time. Following these steps will guarantee a silent and study-friendly environment necessary for your academic development. So, next time you see your friend acing that test without putting up any effort or work into it, you can have the satisfaction that you reached that point of success by working hard, fast and efficiently. All by just following three simple steps.

The factors that are selected for the said study are branch location, branch ambience, branch crowd, branch service and branch size. These branch characteristics have been used to analyze the reason of consumers behavior to visit to any branch of Pizza Hut restaurant. Basically the restaurants industry based on valuing to customer and their wants should be met. The general concept of dining experience is most critical while considering influential factor cause its not necessary the review research focused on all factors which are treated as dining factors. 1.3 Statement of the problem: To study the consumer behavior regarding the selection of any specific branch of Pizza Hut due to the branch characteristics that attracts and motivate the customers to visit any specific branch restaurant. A Branch service means the service quality given by the management to the customers at the particular branch of the customer. Branch Size is the occupied space by the branch that mainly includes the dining place, space and seating arrangement. 2. Literature Review Eating is a daily act and need for all human beings. Depending on individuals reason for eating at restaurants, person intentionally calculates a diverse set of features in front of choosing a restaurant. The implication involved to the restaurant attributes is eventually appraised in the consumers mind, leading to a decision of choosing a restaurant (Wakefield, 1996). The food industry is highly aggressive and patrons have also become more demanding due to sufficient knowledge and information they have about the different trends in restaurant industry which causes increase the significance of effective marketing strategies to get the competitive advantage in order to understand the wants and needs of the customers (David, 2005). Nowadays, it is fairly clear that restaurants must not be designed just in order to meet up the functional needs of the customers but at the same time it must be attractive and eye catching as well. That is the main reason design; location and size are accentuated as key marketing elements by studying the customer preferences (Kuo, 1999) The significance of elevated quality service given to business success, there are various prospective benefits for the management of restaurants from performing a customer-based assessment of the service quality veteran at their organization. In restaurant industry, the intangible nature of services means that particular specifications for the homogeneous quality of service are complicated if at all probable to set. This sometimes put together it difficult for restaurant managers, workforce and consumers to calculate, measure, assessment or confirm service productivity and service quality (Cullen, 2004) Restaurant service engages a performance in which consumers are concerned in the whole service procedure. This is due to the interaction of the clients with the service ambiance and employees throughout the consumption experience, considerate consumers sentimental reaction turn out to be vital in replicating contentment in a service ambiance. Restaurant Services has the affective processes all through the utilization stage play an instantly, unmediated role in influential customer satisfaction (Rossiter, 1978). In restaurant services, consumers habitually act like detectives as they examine for information and normalize their opinions into a set of mindset about the resultant service. The intact obsession in association to the dining features of a restaurant initiates from the dining table communicate to the consumers, with the table top used, if realistic sign apprehension the procedural excellence of the service, mostly relating to the service is bringing out competently (Radocy, 1997). The dining attributes includes the range, quality of the menu and presentation of food offerings. By means of this information, restaurant must focus their hard work on ensuring an attractive collection of drink offerings offered in alluring and unique ways. Foodstuff and drink quality is an essential dining attributes for diners representing restaurant should verify an insistent quality control schedule to make sure foodstuff and drink quality should sustain (Kuo, 1999). Understanding consumer behavior to get Customer satisfy is vital to the restaurant management for the reason that it is normally assumed to be a noteworthy determinant of replicate sales, customer loyalty and affirmative word of mouth. The more pleased the customers, the larger are their retention. The impacts of customer behavior on customer retention are bringing into being to be momentous and positive. Specially, the customer behavior will influence the intentions of consumers (Grimes, 1992). Service quality is defined as a nil defects doing it right for the first time. Information and knowledge about goods quality is inadequate to recognize service quality. In customers mind when there is no defect in the overall dining service, then they consider the quality of the food and services is good enough for them. Understanding of consumer perception of service quality and value is especially important to international service firms because such perceptions are susceptible to cultural differences (Johnson, 2004). The research shows that the effect of physical appearance on behavioral purposes for restaurant customer and finds that influence as a stronger mediator between behavioral intentions and tangible quality constructs when cognition influence actions standard is applied to the location of restaurant (Bitner, 1992). The majority of the preceding customer satisfaction researches have paid attention on recognizing the resource of customer contentment such as characteristic and attributes and on determining useful ways to establish consumers desires, wants and needs. On the other hand, significant dissimilarity comes out in the level of specify of the characteristic investigated. It was found that substantial quality has a better indirect effect than the directly affect signify facilitating the relationship among concrete quality and behavior. The significance of the apparent excellence to get the loyalty effect in restaurant industry is considered as a chief element to keep in the consumers and the business (Jaksà a, 1999). Figure 2.1 Schematic review of the concept of acceptance placed in the context of consumer preferences and satisfaction The peculiarity between preferences and expectations is regularly indistinct even if the concepts are discrete. Expectation is used to some extent contradictory senses. The act of expecting is a faith concerning what will take place in the prospect. These definitions are able to be eminent from preference that pass on to several preferred state and imply to more than a single state is probable and so as to there are various options. Unfortunately expectation is furthermore used limply to imply a demand for something plus in this sagacity is a sort of strong preference (Flynn, 1994). Branch communications engage a variety of verbal, aural and non verbal descriptions, used together to detain and grasp customers interest and to serve up as reclamation indications for later evoke. These mentioned elements can narrate to the branch identity in a significant way. Considerably, the most broadly examined elements are pricing and quality of the food (Rossiter, 1978). The main cause in this industry are the entry barriers that are generally low and any one can by far enter due to low investment required. Whenever consumer is satisfy from the arrangement by the management, the food quality give by the restaurant employee with the affirmative approach than this may increase the constancy towards the particular restaurant increases in the business revenue the word of mouth publicity of the particular restaurant (Cullen, 2004). It has been studied that a consumer gets effortlessly fascinated by more novel and complex exterior feature of restaurants. Likewise, this also leads customers to an encouraging buying feeling and leads them to visit this eye-catching restaurant. Considerate how the branch attracts the attention of the consumers from the other different restaurants, exterior looks is the initial step that show the way to success and if this can additional direct the consumer to a affirmative mood and feelings (Milliman, 1986). The restaurants entire setting, the atmospherics and the ambience are constantly very important in determining both consumers and front line employees approach about the procedures and service delivery result. This necessitates that; it was exceptionally significant that the understanding of the tangible force on service quality, like generous and physical facilities, along with the appearance of personnel. Play areas are the additional facility provided by some of the branches in order to attract small kids and the crowd are also the indicator for attracting the customers depending on the nature of the restaurants (Bitner, 1992). Customer behavior is a key element for the planning of the marketing in view of the fact that satisfaction does sway customers intention to loyalty of a consumer to the branch. Therefore, marketers are supposed to look into the issues that would have an effect on customer preferences intensity. Besides, as customer prospect are altering over time and it is advised to determine the customer satisfaction, preferences and expectation on regular basis and grip complaints timely and effectively. 3. Research Methods The food industry is highly aggressive and patrons have also become more demanding due to sufficient knowledge and information they have about the different trends in restaurant industry which causes increase the significance of effective marketing strategies to get the competitive advantage in order to understand the wants and needs of the customers with the purpose of securing long term loyalty of the customer to their brand. Customers waiting time when they were waiting for their turn to get seated in peak times While customers are selecting the salads from the salad corner. 4. Research Results The restaurant industry has undoubtedly not been free from either augmented competition or from increasing customer expectations regarding quality. In the greatly competitive food industry, large operators chain have a propensity to gain competitive gain in the course of cost leadership, likely only due to standardization and economies of scale beginning from large market shares, while smaller, independent restaurants on the other hand endeavor to gain benefit through differentiation. The food industry is greatly aggressive and customers have also grown to be more demanding due to adequate awareness and information they have about the diverse styles in restaurant industry which increase the consequence of successful marketing strategies to obtain the competitive advantage to understand the requirements and desires of the customers Table 3.1 The above table divides the data in terms of gender. Gender is one of the most important demographic factors when it comes to the behavioural studies. In order to get the equal and variety of responses, the selection of the respondents was taken up with great care of so, that different aspect would be covered and highlighted. In the above data set the no of mail respondents were 44 and the total no of female respondents were 56. The male represents the 44% of our data set while the female is on majority and represents 56% of the total data set. Table 3.2 Customer behavior and preferences are the key element for the planning of the marketing in view of the fact that satisfaction does sway customers intention to loyalty of a consumer to the branch. Therefore, marketers are supposed to look into the issues that would have an effect on customer preferences intensity. Besides, as customer prospect are altering over time and it is advised to determine the customer satisfaction, preferences and expectation on regular basis and grip complaints timely and effectively. The above table displays the rating of factors with respect to the importance in the perception of the customers that affects the consumer behavior while selecting the branch. The total sample size for the analysis was equal to 100 (N=100). If we analyze the above table the mean value of the branch service among all of the variables is on the higher side its value is equal to 3.52 approximately 4 conveys an idea that the service provided by any branch is the most important factor among the all that have been studied for the said study. Branch service includes the welcome given by the staff of the branch to its customers, the time they took to book the order of their customers, the way staff members respond to the order of the customers and in the time of need help their customers to get things finalize for the final order placement. The second most important part of the branch service is the serving time (time they take to serve the order) a more delayed serving of the order develops the bad impression about the branch and there would be a less likelihood of the customers to visit the particular branch again. If we study in too deep the branch service also incorporates the attention of the staff after the placement of t he order it doesnt mean that one staff member should always be standing on the head of customer but, to make sure that if people would be required with any other thing during their meal time it should be provided on time. Branch service is the most important factor in the mind of the customer and the branch managers should take care that their service quality is on higher side and doesnt ever compromise on it which helps them to get the customer satisfaction which is defined as the consumers fulfillment response. It is a judgment that the service or product features, its attributes provided a delightful level of consumption associated achievement including levels of under fulfillment or over fulfillment. This definition of satisfaction proposes that the assessment method covers the whole utilization experience and this creates the preferences for a particular branch by a consumer. This feature is essential in the learning of consumer satisfaction and preferences in services, given t he empirical, interactive character of service encounter. It facilitates in creating feelings and develops sense of affection towards the particular branch restaurant resulting in a stronger influence on consumer behavior towards the branch. Restaurant strives for instructive affirmative feelings to their brand name by stage management tangible attributes. Consumers compare service quality with cost to determine service value with one branch to another. Service cost is basically what consumers have to give up or sacrifice to obtain a desired service. Since it has a negative impact on consumers budgets, it would have a negative influence on their perceptions of service value. The concept of cost can be extended to include nonmonetary cost such a service time. Service time is the amount of time during which a service is provided. Since most customers would like to have faster services, service time would affect perceived service value in the same way monetary cost would After the Branch service the second most important factor in our study is the branch location the place where the branch is situated. The mean value of the branch location is 3.25 approximately 4 means customer also think of this factor while deciding which branch to opt for their meal time. Branch Location includes the availability of the parking, reputation of the area, past record of criminal activities and lot more. Branch location is also one of the most important factors while visiting any branch for the meal. The convenience of location is very important that includes the parking space, seating availability in the restaurant; the nearness to roof-tops like peoples residence, hotels, and motels is significant for the accomplishment of restaurants all through the dinner mealtime duration. The cost of attaining parking near to a restaurant is sighted as a non-revenue generating expenditure. The impact of location of branches and food service has a positive association with the co nsumer behavior due to the reason of busy schedule of the people nowadays. Some customer prefers buying the food or dining in the restaurant located nearer to their offices and/or home. The third most important factor is the branch crowd, if we look at its mean values it is around 2.35. On the basis of our analysis scale, it is rated as some way in between unimportant and neutral means that in the selection of the branch outlet is also considered after the above two that we discussed earlier. Usually the people belong to the upper class visit the selected restaurant outlets, the crowd factor is of least important but, it is important as it has been observed in the restaurant industry that people from the upper class opt those branches that have a high number of visiting people belong to the upper end class. Factors like branch size and ambience are of not that much important comparing to other factors in our results this is due to the fact that the selected outlet is on the higher side in these terms. In restaurants tangibles are appropriate to the restaurants physical facilities, paraphernalia and manifestation of personnel. While restaurant consumers do not take d elivery of only serving of food, but also a huge component of service, they undeniably depend on earlier indication in the deficiency of tangible verification by which to measure service quality. In restaurant branches ambiance fundamentals are surface and texture, smell, color, sound, and texture inducing intuitive reactions in restaurant atmosphere that persuades purchase likelihood known as the mechanical clues. For paradigm, the aroma of chocolate chip cookies baking generates affectionate feelings, and stimulates their enthusiasm for a treat. The restaurants entire setting, the atmospherics and the ambience are important in determining both consumers and front line employees approach about the procedures and service delivery result. This necessitates that; it was exceptionally significant that the understanding of the tangible force on service quality, like generous and physical facilities, along with the appearance of personnel. In our result, ambiance might not be the most im portant factor due to not having any Play areas that considered additional facility provided by some of the branches of differences food chains in order to attract small kids also the indicator for attracting the customers depending on the nature of the restaurants The selected outlet branches are already known for their ambience and size; they have adopted a theme for their restaurant that has been practice in each of their branch so, when customer visits any of their branches they find out the same theme therefore, in the selected retail outlet its importance is on very lower side. Below are the pie charts representing the two most important factors of the study branch location and branch service. The other factors are not significant as these two are their pie chart are as follows 3.3 Branch Service Statistics The above pie chart represents the most important factor in our study that is Branch Service if we study the above pie chart the responses were constant in the three categories means that people have mix responses with respect to the branch service of the selected outlets. The 52% of the respondents were considered the Brach service is the important factor when it comes to select ion any outlet. Mangers do focus and make corrective action in their services of the respective branch. 3.4 Branch Location Statistics The above pie chart represents the second most important factor in our study that is Branch Location if we study the above pie chart the responses were mixed in the selected categories means that people have mix responses with respect to the branch location. The 38 respondents were considered the Brach Location is the Highly Important factor when it comes to selection any outlet. Top Management does focus and should perform the background study before choosing any location for the opening of their branch. 4. Conclusion In todays promptness and increasingly more competitive market, the bottom line of a companys strategies is to make income and add to the development of the company. Customer gratification, superiority of the service, satisfaction, quality and retention are the matters that persuade all organizations including profit or non-profit large or small and multinational or national. Customer behavior for restaurant branch is regularly used as a sign of whether consumer will come back to a restaurant. Whereas there is no agreement of a satisfied customers repeat visit, it is nearly certain that a not satisfied consumer will not return. A study of the basics or attributes of consumer preference be supposed to give indication concerning what action a restaurant service manager must take to raise the probability that consumers will appear back. It appears that study is not often concluded that the remarkable rate of malfunction in the restaurant service industry advices that the management can find the targets of converting consumer preference into financial achievement a vague one. We accept as true that restaurant failures are partially a consequence of managements lack of strategic direction in determining and focusing on customer contentment and preference. Research has shown that Consumers consider branch service, Branch Location and Branch Crowd as the most important element while choosing any Pizza Hut branch. Achieving the customer satisfactions leads towards market share as well as loyalty towards restaurants and to maintain the progress which is necessary to keep the effective measure in terms of customer demands and fulfillments. Though, it is understood that restaurant possessor would like to identify the strongest influence on re-patronage intentions. A study divulges that customer behavior is the better predictor of intention comparing to service quality to repurchase. Increasing trend in re-patronage is always due to service quality which is provided by the management to the consumers and at the same time customer should be satisfied. Any of the factor missing may cause the decrease in loyalty of the customer towards that particular branch and customers would be unwilling to re-visit for dining to the same restaurant.

Critical Review of a Psychology Research Article on Students Essay
Research Issues in Psychology Critical Review of a Research Article Pupils who exhibit gifted characteristics along with another disability are referred to as ââ¬Ëtwice-exceptional studentsââ¬â¢ (Morrison, 2001; Nielsen 2002). This term is used in the article that I have chosen to review, which analyzes the responses and perceptions through interview, of one particular individual (Andrew) who was identified as being gifted and talented (G/T) and who had emotional and behavioral disabilities (EBD). What the researchers aimed to accomplish through this analysis was a clearer understanding of Andrewââ¬â¢s community and school experiences, as they stated that there was a lack of empirical data focusing upon pupils who displayed such behaviors. The features of the research design were straightforward and simple: a qualitative analysis with one participant; a structured interview, recorded then later transcribed and analyzed to produce 3 themes; a conclusion which produced findings of Andrewââ¬â¢s experiences as a twice-exceptional student. It is the appropriateness of the methods that were used in this study which will inform my first critique of this article. I will then move on to discuss the data which was collected, before finally examining how effective the conclusion is. Morrison and Omdal chose to include only one participant in their study, which compares quite significantly to the research of others in similar areas that have included a greater number of participants (Gross, 1994; Sankar-DeLeeuw, 2004; Howe et al, 1998). This particular participant, named under the pseudonym of Andrew, was 22 years of age when he consented to partake in the research. A brief description of his formidable successes both academic and socially, pointed out that he was currently employed as a ââ¬Ëpermanent substitute teacherââ¬â¢ (p.2). The reader is immediately drawn to a young man who has accomplished and triumphed against his ââ¬Ëdisabilitiesââ¬â¢; instantly gaining the respect of the readersââ¬â¢ as his successes show strength of character and determination. Surely then questions must arise about the validity of using such a small, select sample. Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife: Floozy or Innocent Girl? Essay
Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is a young, pretty woman, who is mistrusted by her husband, Curley. The other characters refer to her only as ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢s wife,ââ¬â¢ which is significant as she is the only character in the novel without a name. She is a simple object or possession belonging to her husband and this shows the severity of the sexual discrimination in America in 1930s. I believe Steinbeck would have thought of her not as a person but a symbol. Almost everyone on the ranch is lonely and she symbolises this. The audience would come to believe she is a weak isolated character however, the men are fearful of her. She is the wife of their boss. She has power and this power creates fear among the ranch workers. She is both in charge and screaming for attention. When we first meet Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, the description of her suggests she is clearly overdressed for life on a ranch. ââ¬ËHer fingernails were redââ¬â¢ and she wore ââ¬Ëred mules, on the insteps of which w ere little bouquets of red ostrich feathers.ââ¬â¢ The repetition of the red suggests danger. This could be a warning about trouble in the future. Danger creates fear and the workers on the ranch definitely fear her. She has the power to dismiss them from their jobs or even have them lynched as she is the bossââ¬â¢s wife. This ââ¬ËMiss Dynamiteââ¬â¢ image is supported by the fact that George thinks she will be trouble. He calls her a ââ¬Ëtrampââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëpoisonââ¬â¢ and tells Lennie (who has taken a shine to her) to ââ¬Ëleave her beââ¬â¢. He sees her as a threat and doesnââ¬â¢t want Lennie to get involved with someone who could potentially lose them their jobs. The audience begins to dislike this woman. This highlights the prejudice against women at the time. She comes across as a confident flirt when in company due to her body language. The first description of her includes ââ¬Ë..so that her body was thrown forwardââ¬â¢. This gesture suggests that she almost throws herself at men. George called her a ââ¬Ëtrampââ¬â¢ and her actions are beginning to fulfill this opinion of her. I think some would view this as disappointing. Women were mainly seen in whore houses at the time. The fact that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife had found herself a husband, lived on a ranch and not in a whore house, suggests she is a ââ¬Ëgood girlââ¬â¢. We want her to be different from the general view of women at the time which had been brought about by prejudice. Unfortunately she comes across as no different. This continues in chapter 5, when Curleyââ¬â¢s wife consoles Lennie. ââ¬ËShe moved closerââ¬â¢ is repeated showing how she continuously reduces the distance between herself and Lennie. It suggests she is forward and flaunting herself at him. The audience could start to feel uncomfortable and anxious at this point. This could be the moment of danger that was foreshadowed in the beginning. She seems to be the powerful Miss Dynamite. However, there are so many implications that she is a lonely victim. After she is killed there is a poignant moment in the book. The long sentences emphasise the movement of peace, time standing still before the men find her body. All the negative aspects of the character disappear and we feel sympathy for her. She tries to convey glamour and sophistication when really she is just a sweet country girl. Steinbeck describes her as ââ¬Ëvery prettyââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësimpleââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ësweetââ¬â¢ when dead. The audience now realise the simplicity of her true self. ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦the discontent and the ache for attention were all gone from her faceââ¬â¢ shows that she is at peace. She doesnââ¬â¢t have to pretend anymore. She has been putting on an act. She had a dream which we only become aware of in this chapter to become a film star in Hollywood. One theme in the book is the American dream. Lennie and George have one. However, it is suggested that this is unreachable as George talks of them owning ââ¬Ëred and blue and green rabbitsââ¬â¢ which gives the American dream a fantasy quality. The fact that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife still seems to believe in her dream gives her a naivety and we feel more sympathy for her and the audience warm to her. I think this is the point in the book (when Steinbeck reveals her true character) that the audience can look back over the book and think of her differently, as the lonely victim. For instance, she is constantly searching for her husband which could be an excuse to mingle with the other men. ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m looking for Curleyââ¬â¢ could have a hidden meaning and she could be desperate for some attention if she is lonely. The loneliness of her character is supported by the scene with Lennie in Chapter 5. She tells Lennie the about herself and her dream. She is so desperate to talk to someone and for someone to listen. ââ¬Ë.. her words tumbled out in a passion of communicationââ¬â¢ shows how desperate she is to share her story. This desperation continues when ââ¬Ëshe went on with her story quickly, before she could be interrupted.ââ¬â¢ This could be seen as her being conceited. On the other hand, she could just be overwhelmed that someone is actually listening to her so she wants to say everything before it becomes too good to be true and Lennie loses interest. This implies she has no one to talk to which is saddening as it shows how isolated she must be. This isolation is emphasised further when she canââ¬â¢t even connect with Lennie. The one person who she starts to befriend turns out to be too good to be true. ââ¬ËDonââ¬â¢t you think of nothing but rabbits?ââ¬â¢ shows that Lennie isnââ¬â¢t really listening. They lose what was a potentially beautiful connection. In conclusion, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife dreams of being Miss Dynamite but is really only the lonely victim. Her dream was to be a film star in Hollywood but she finds herself living on a ranch. One of her strengths is her status in society as the bossââ¬â¢s wife but apart from this she seems to be the lonely victim through and through even though she tries to cover it up with her ââ¬Ëglamââ¬â¢ image. She hides behind a mask and the audience only realise when she dies.
